  • Alan Hook - Video Games

    A lot of attention has been paid to games as a media form over the past 30 years, we have come a long way from Spacewars and Pong. Arguments are often made to defend the medium based on its commercial or financial success, its market growth or its ability to create fun and engaging experiences… but games are important for other reasons. Games as a medium can offer us new modes of cultural and artistic expression, creating meaningful and important interactive experiences. Video games are an important medium as they create systems and choices, stories and connections. This presentation will look at games as the most important media of our time to think about important social, cultural and political issues.

    Uproar Comics are a Northern Ireland based Multimedia Production, Publishing and Services Company. In June 2011 from a love of comics we as a group of hobbyists produced and we released what has become our flagship title the Award winning and on-going series “Zombies Hi”. With rapid sales we continued on with the series and soon began facilitating workshops around comic production.
  • Break Out - Stephen Trimble - 3D Dojo

    Stephen Trimble graduate of Staffordshire University specialising in 3D design and animation. He is a lecturer for Creative Media Technologies at SWC and co-founder of Critical Pixel who placed 2nd in the European competition Make Something Unreal Live 2013. Stephen will offer young people the chance to explore digital facial rigging using FaceShift technology.
  • Break Out - Barry Herbert - Games for Learning

    Barry will talk about how games can be used as learning tools and how gameification is becoming and important method in modern teaching practice.
  • Break Out - Catherine O'Kane - Introduction to Concept Art

    Catherine O'Kane has a vast knowledge base on concept art and has worked on a number of different projects in recent years. These include Mid Antrim Museum & Arts Centre, Lisneal College, The Model Niland Art Gallery and the BBC.

  • William Simpson - Storyboard - Game Of Thrones

    William Simpson is a comic artist from Northern Ireland. He has worked for Warrior, 2000AD, Marvel, Dark Horse, DC and Vertigo drawing Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Hellblazer, Aliens and Batman.Since 2011 he has produced storyboards and design work for Game Of Thrones. William will speak about his work on Game of Thrones and extensive work in comics.
  • Break Out - Anthony Ward - Digital Tutor

    Antony Ward will be hosting a virtual discussion about 3D development, working freelance in the computer game industry and use of Maya as a development tool.
  • Break Out - Critical Pixel - Student to Studio

    Critical Pixel is an independent games studio based in the UK. They started up during the Make Something Unreal Live 2013 European competition, placing 2nd overall. Their game, Polymorph, has now reached its demo stage that can be downloaded and played for free. The team will talk about how graduates can use the skills acquired to develop content for computer games after University.
  • Break Out - Paul McGovern - Core (Creative Orientation to Reaching Employment)

    Paul is a lecturer in digital media at South West College Enniskillen campus. He specialises in 3D development, animation and visual effects. Paul is passionate about developing the digital landscape of Northern Ireland.Paul has been recently appointed as a representative of Honeycomb to facilitate digital skills development. CORE focuses on creative problem solving and digital literacy. The aim is to help people gain employment within the creative sector.

Northern Ireland Creative Hitech Expo is a celebration of digital creativity to take place in the scenic lakeside town of Enniskillen, home of the G8 Conference in 2013 on Friday May 9th and Saturday May 10th. NICHE is a series of workshops, panel discussions and keynote addresses to inspire a generation of animators, games developers, musicians and digital storytellers to realise their creative talent. We seek inspirational events and presenters to deliver a stimulating programme to our participants aligned with our four tracks of 2D animation, gaming, music technology and digital storytelling.

Mike Collins

Mike Collins

Mike Collins is a comic artist based in the UK. He has worked for 2000AD, Marvel and DC, drawing Judge Dredd, Spiderman, Batman and Superman and many others.


Greg Maguire

Greg has been instrumental in the launch and development of numerous heavy-hitters of animation: Walt Disney Feature Animation, Industrial Light & Magic, Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm Animation.


William Simpson

Since 2000 Will has provided storyboards for films and is a partner in Belfast based animation company Rogue Rocket.Since 2011 he has produced storyboards and design work for Game Of Thrones.


Henry Bull

Henry is involved in the end to end recruitment process at Double Negative: creating job specs, reviewing reels and shortlisting applicants,dealing with the visas and relocation packages.


Alan Hook

Alan Hook is a Lecturer in Interactive Media at the University of Ulster and a researcher in Media and Play at the University of Ulster’s Centre for Media Research. He teaches modules on Procedural Rhetoric, Transmedia Narratives and the History and Analysis of New Media in the School of Media, Film and Journalism. He is currently working on a new games project that investigates player orientation in platform games, and a project on the possibility of games, narrative agency and biopics.


Deirdre De Bara

Deirdre de Barra is an artist from Maynooth, County Kildare, who is associated with Longstone Comics. She is the creator of the self-published comic Found (2008).
